Our Furry Friends: Sometimes perplexing, our pets occupy a unique position in our hearts as pet owners and enthusiasts. Animal studies in terms of pet behavior is interesting as one is able to learn a great deal about them: for example, about how they operate inside, remarkable cognitive ability dogs possess when relating human gestures or understanding their name and similar styles in cats to distinguish their own names from those of humans speaking differently.
From such understanding comes the capacity to care for an animal as the care would call for and facilitate. Interestingly, 77% of cat owners and 75% of dog owners believe their pets to be part of the family (Pet Food Institute, 2020). However, pets are not exempted from behavioral issues; for example, excessive barking, aggression, and separation anxiety negatively impact the pets as well as their owners. This increasing holistic pet care emphasizes the integration of physical, mental, and emotional wellness and provides a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stimulating environment. Technologies such as wearable devices and virtual reality platforms are changing pet care by managing activity level, health metrics, and providing real-time data about mental stimulation in pets. Integration of these technologies with collaboration with researchers can help to advance our knowledge of pet behavior for a world where all pets lead happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
